The Question Most Parents Ask Us First

“Where did they even learn this?”

You’ve watched your child change, and you cannot find the doorway back to who they were.

The behavior at home, at school, in the quiet moments when you thought things were finally calm. You keep turning it over at night. What did I miss, what do I do now, who do I even tell.

And underneath all of it, the thought you rarely say out loud: that somehow, as their parent, this reflects on you.

This Is Not Your Failure

It doesn’t reflect on you. A child carries what happened to them long before they can find words for it. What you’re seeing is the carrying, not your failure.

You Just Want Them to Be a Kid Again

There’s a version of your child you remember.

The one who played with toys, who laughed easily, who didn’t seem to be guarding something you can’t name.

“I just want them to be normal,” you’ve said, maybe only to yourself. “Just to play.”

That wish is not small, and it’s not too much to ask. It’s the whole point of the work we do.

How We Help Your Child Find Their Words Again

For children too young to “just talk,” we draw together, so they can point to and name what they can’t yet put into words. With teens, we work through the real situations they’re actually facing, not the ones a worksheet imagines.

When hard behavior shows up, we assume it came from something that happened. So we treat the cause, at a pace that feels safe, instead of treating the child like the problem.

When You're Trying to Bring Them Back Home

Some of the families we work with are in the middle of something heavier. A child has been removed. You’re doing everything the system asks, and you still lie awake wondering whether it will be enough.

One parent told us, after, that without this work they wouldn’t have gotten their kid back.

What You Can Expect from the Work

We can’t promise an outcome. What we can tell you is how the work goes.

We meet each member of the family on their own first, to hear their side without an audience. Then we bring everyone back together, around the goals you actually share.

We See Your Child as a Partner

This is the part of our work we care most about. We don't treat your child as a case to be managed. We see them as a partner who leads the way, and we follow.

We also pay close attention to what isn’t said, because the youngest clients, and sometimes the most guarded teens, tell you the truth in everything except their words.

When a family carries a different language, a different country, a different sense of where home is, that belongs in the room too.

Your Language and Culture Belong in the Room

Our founder, Duol Rut, came to this country as a refugee from Sudan. He knows what it means to rebuild a sense of belonging from the ground up, and to raise children inside two worlds at once.

So the care we offer is built to fit your family’s language and culture, not to ask your family to translate itself into someone else’s idea of normal.

Dr. Duol Rut, warm and dignified

Hi, I'm Duol Rut.

Psy.D., LIMHP, LPC

I’m a Doctor of Psychology (PsyD), Licensed Independent Mental Health Practitioner (LIMHP) and Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC). During my 20+ years in mental health, most of that time has been spent sitting with children, teens, and the parents who love them through the hardest stretches.

My background shapes how I listen. I grew up across cultures and countries, and that taught me to slow down, to assume there’s a story behind the behavior, and to never rush a family toward a finish line they didn’t choose.

I work with parents of younger children, parents of teens, and families working to repair communication and come back together.

You don't have to arrive with the right words. That's my job. Yours is to show up with your child, and we'll start from there.
